Aloe vera is a perennial plant that grows in eastern and southern Africa. It is grown in the West Indies and has been found in Texas. The plant has a thick fibrous horizontally spreading root that produces large basal leaves. The leaves can grow up to one to two feet long and two to three feet wide, gradually tapering to a point. They are green on both sides and have bear spiny teeth on margins. Yellow, red, purple, or pale striped flowers bloom throughout the year. They grow and there is a long raceme at the top of the flower stalk that originates from the center of the leaves. The flower stalk grows up to four and a half feet in height. The fruit is triangular in shape with numerous seeds. Only the leaves are useful.
